What is MES in manufacturing?

MES is the software layer that manages and tracks production in real time, sitting between ERP systems and the shop floor.

Definition

An MES is the software layer that sits between your ERP (SAP, Oracle) and the shop floor, managing and tracking everything that happens during production in real time. It handles work orders, material consumption, equipment status, quality checks, and labour , giving operations teams a live picture of what's being made, where, and whether it's within spec. The simplest distinction: ERP tells you what to make, MES makes sure it actually gets made correctly.

What this means when you're hiring

MES skills are the most sought-after capability in manufacturing IT recruitment right now. Companies running Siemens Opcenter, Rockwell Plex, Apriso, or Werum PAS-X need people who understand not just the software but the production processes underneath it. In senior hires, I'm looking for candidates who can translate between IT and operations , because the best MES people I've placed can sit in a conversation with a plant manager and a software architect and be credible with both.

Where candidates get this wrong

The biggest misconception is that MES is just data collection. It's not , it's execution management. The system enforces process, not just records it. Another one I hear constantly: 'we already have SAP, we don't need MES.' SAP tells you the plan. MES executes the plan and catches every deviation before it becomes a batch failure or a recall.

How expectations change by level

At junior level, MES means configuration, user support, and basic troubleshooting. Mid-level is where you start seeing project ownership , rollouts, integrations, validation. Senior MES professionals are typically leading global programmes, defining architecture, or acting as the bridge between IT strategy and OT reality. The best ones I've placed at Director level have implemented MES across multiple sites and understand the business case as well as the technical stack.
