MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management) is the full framework managing all production operations , quality, maintenance, inventory, and execution , across a manufacturing enterprise.
Definition
MOM is the broader framework that sits above MES, covering all operations across a manufacturing enterprise , not just execution but also quality, maintenance, inventory, and performance management. Where MES is focused on a single production layer, MOM integrates all the operational domains defined in the ISA-95 standard. Think of it as MES grown up: same core execution capability, but extended across the full operations lifecycle and typically across multiple sites.
What this means when you're hiring
When a company says they're hiring for MOM, they usually want someone who understands the full ISA-95 model, not just the shop floor layer. These roles sit at the intersection of IT strategy, operations management, and digital transformation. I've seen candidates with pure MES backgrounds struggle in MOM roles because they think too narrowly , MOM requires a systems thinker, someone who can see how production, quality, maintenance, and inventory interact.
Where candidates get this wrong
MOM and MES are not the same thing, despite being used interchangeably in job descriptions. MES is one component within a MOM architecture. The other misconception is that MOM is purely a software category , it's actually a management philosophy and standards framework (ISA-95) that software vendors have built products around.
How expectations change by level
MOM roles tend to attract people with 8-15 years of manufacturing IT experience. At Director and VP level, MOM responsibility usually means owning the entire operational technology roadmap , deciding which platforms to standardise on, managing vendor relationships with the likes of Siemens or Dassault, and aligning with corporate IT strategy. It's a fundamentally different scope to a plant-level MES role.
