What is a PLC in manufacturing?

A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is an industrial computer that controls machinery on the factory floor, executing logic in real time to drive physical processes at the base of the automation stack.

Definition

A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is a ruggedised industrial computer that controls machinery and processes on the factory floor, executing logic programs in milliseconds to respond to sensor inputs and drive actuators, motors, and valves. PLCs sit at ISA-95 Level 1 , they're the bottom of the automation stack, interfacing directly with physical equipment. Every MES integration ultimately depends on reliable PLC-level data coming up through the stack.

What this means when you're hiring

PLC engineers are the foundation of any automation team and are in persistent short supply, particularly those with experience across multiple vendor platforms (Siemens S7/TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Beckhoff TwinCAT). As MES projects extend deeper into equipment integration, the ability to interface between PLC/SCADA layers and MES becomes a bridge skill that commands a premium. I see this combination most in senior automation and digital manufacturing roles.

Where candidates get this wrong

PLCs don't make production decisions , they execute instructions. The decision logic (what to make, in what sequence, with which materials) comes from MES. This distinction matters in hiring because a PLC engineer and an MES engineer are solving different problems at different layers of the stack. Conflating them in a job description usually results in hiring the wrong person.

How expectations change by level

Senior PLC engineers are increasingly expected to work fluently in the data layer , OPC UA connectivity, historian integration, and SCADA architecture , as well as the control layer. The professionals commanding the highest salaries in this space typically hold multi-vendor PLC expertise, functional safety qualifications (TUV SIL), and a working understanding of MES integration. That combination is rare and consistently in demand.
