A Solution Architect designs the end-to-end technical blueprint for manufacturing digitalisation programmes, spanning MES, ERP, SCADA, and analytics layers.
Definition
A Solution Architect designs the end-to-end technical solution for a manufacturing digitalisation programme, typically spanning MES, ERP, SCADA, cloud, and analytics layers. Unlike a platform-specific MES Architect, a Solution Architect operates at the system-of-systems level. They produce solution designs, interface specifications, and technology decisions that the delivery team then executes. They're accountable for the architecture, not the code.
What this means when you're hiring
Solution Architects with genuine manufacturing technology depth are among the most sought-after profiles in the market. Too many candidates for this role come from enterprise IT backgrounds with no OT exposure, and they're quickly found out when the client starts asking about ISA-95 hierarchies or historian integration patterns. Salaries range from £95,000 to £145,000 in the UK, with total packages frequently exceeding £160,000 when including bonuses and car allowances. EU rates run €105,000 to €155,000.
Where candidates get this wrong
The title is freely given in consulting but rarely earned. I interview candidates weekly who call themselves Solution Architects but who cannot explain the ISA-88 batch model, have never designed an interface between MES and ERP at a data level, or who confuse architecture documentation with project planning. A real Solution Architect has made decisions under uncertainty and can explain why those decisions were right given what was known at the time.
How expectations change by level
Solution Architects are by definition senior professionals. A credible profile requires 10 or more years of combined technical delivery and design experience across at least two manufacturing verticals. Many enter the role from senior MES Engineer or Technical Consultant backgrounds. The jump into Solution Architecture is less about learning new tools and more about accepting responsibility for decisions rather than just executing them.
