An MES Project Manager delivers MES implementation programmes, coordinating vendors, stakeholders, and workstreams to hit scope, budget, and timeline targets.
Definition
An MES Project Manager plans, coordinates, and delivers MES implementation programmes on time, within budget, and to scope. They manage vendor relationships, internal stakeholders, change management, and risk across what are often complex, multi-workstream technology projects. Unlike a generic IT project manager, the best MES PMs understand enough about manufacturing processes and platform behaviour to challenge estimates and spot risks before they become issues.
What this means when you're hiring
Strong MES Project Managers with manufacturing floor exposure are consistently in short supply. Many candidates come from general IT programme backgrounds and struggle with the OT environment, the validation demands of regulated industries, and the politics of plant-level change. Salaries range from £65,000 to £100,000 in the UK, with senior programme managers reaching £120,000. Day rates for experienced contractors sit at £500 to £750. In Germany, €75,000 to €115,000 is the typical permanent range.
Where candidates get this wrong
Companies often try to fill this role with a PMP-certified IT project manager who has never set foot on a shop floor. The certification doesn't matter. Factory experience does. An MES implementation runs through commissioning, UAT, and go-live phases that are fundamentally different from a software rollout. Someone who doesn't know the difference between a site acceptance test and a qualification protocol will struggle from day one.
How expectations change by level
Junior MES PMs typically come from assistant or coordinator backgrounds within a systems integrator or OEM. Mid-level PMs own single-site implementations independently. Senior profiles run multi-site or global rollout programmes, often managing a team of project managers beneath them. The step from single-site to multi-site programme management is the biggest jump in this career path and the one where the most mismatched placements happen.
