How long does it take to fill a senior MES role?

Senior MES roles typically take 60 to 120 days to fill; attempts to rush this process consistently produce lower-quality hires.

Definition

Time-to-fill is the number of calendar days between a job being approved and a candidate accepting an offer. It's one of the most cited metrics in recruitment, and one of the most misleading if you don't account for seniority and specialism. Average time-to-fill across all roles sits around 44 days, but that number is almost irrelevant for MES and industrial automation.

What this means when you're hiring

For senior MES roles, realistic time-to-fill is 60 to 120 days depending on geography and seniority. Germany and Switzerland consistently run longer due to notice period norms (three to six months). I've had PAS-X Architects take 90 days from brief to accepted offer, not because the process was slow, but because the talent pool is narrow and the best people need time to disengage properly. Companies that demand 30-day fill times for senior digital manufacturing roles are setting themselves up to hire from the available pool rather than the best pool. Those are very different pools.

Where candidates get this wrong

Most companies benchmark their MES hiring against general industry averages and then blame the recruiter when it takes longer. Specialist technical roles in niche platforms like Siemens Opcenter or Rockwell FactoryTalk simply take longer because the candidate universe is smaller. A fast fill on a specialist role is often a red flag; it usually means the recruiter went to their existing database rather than the full market.

How expectations change by level

Director-level MES and operational technology roles typically run 90 to 120 days. Manager-level specialist roles run 60 to 90 days. Analyst and junior consultant roles can hit 30 to 45 days if the spec is tight. Any stakeholder expecting sub-30-day fill times on senior technical roles either doesn't understand the market or is prepared to compromise on candidate quality.
