AS9100 is the aerospace and defence quality management system standard, built on ISO 9001 with additional requirements for safety-critical manufacturing.
Definition
AS9100 is the internationally recognised quality management system standard for the aviation, space, and defence industries. It builds on ISO 9001 and adds specific requirements around risk management, configuration management, and product/process control that are critical in safety-critical manufacturing. Certification is required for most suppliers in the aerospace supply chain.
What this means when you're hiring
Aerospace and defence clients assume AS9100 familiarity , it's the baseline. What I probe for is how a candidate's MES work has supported AS9100 requirements in practice: traceability, configuration management, non-conformance tracking, and first article inspection processes. Engineers who've configured MES systems to support AS9100 audits are far more deployable than those who just know the standard exists.
