ITAR regulates the export and access of US defence-related articles and data , manufacturing roles on ITAR programmes often require US Person status.
Definition
ITAR is the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations, administered by the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls. It controls the export, import, and transfer of defence-related articles and services listed on the US Munitions List. For manufacturers, ITAR compliance affects who can access certain systems, data, and technical information , including foreign nationals working on ITAR-controlled programmes.
What this means when you're hiring
ITAR creates a real hiring constraint for defence and aerospace manufacturers. It's not unusual for a client to specify that a candidate must be a US Person , US citizen or permanent resident , because the role involves access to ITAR-controlled technical data. When I'm recruiting MES engineers into defence manufacturing, ITAR eligibility can be the deciding factor, regardless of technical skill.
