A Functional Consultant aligns MES configuration with manufacturing business processes, leading workshops and translating operational requirements into system design.
Definition
A Functional Consultant focuses on aligning system configuration with business processes, without necessarily going deep into technical architecture or custom development. In an MES context, they lead workshops, document process requirements, configure standard modules, and ensure the platform reflects how the manufacturing operation actually works. They're the bridge between operations teams and the implementation project.
What this means when you're hiring
Functional Consultants are the workhorses of any MES programme. Most large implementations need two or three for every one architect. Salaries in the UK range from £50,000 to £80,000, with senior functional leads reaching £90,000. Contract day rates sit between £400 and £650. In EU markets, €55,000 to €90,000 covers the majority of the market. Life Sciences and Automotive tend to pay at the top of the range due to compliance complexity.
Where candidates get this wrong
There's a tendency to underestimate this role. Functional Consultants who've worked across multiple plants and sectors carry enormous value because they've seen what works and what causes go-live failures. The best ones don't just document requirements; they challenge them. When a production manager asks for something that will cause problems six months later, a strong Functional Consultant says so.
How expectations change by level
Junior functional consultants shadow workshops and document processes. Mid-level own full functional workstreams including requirements gathering, configuration, and user acceptance testing. Senior Functional Consultants lead client engagements, mentor junior team members, and often specialise in a regulated sector or specific module set. The Senior Functional Consultant is often the role that gets promoted into MES Consultant or Project Manager tracks.
